Sonic Nomad is an Indigenous owned and operated film, TV and video business championing First Nations stories through expert video production and heartfelt storytelling.
Back in 2004, whilst in the process of learning his trade at film school, Grant Leigh Saunders, a proud member of the Biripi people, founded what was soon to become one of the most prestigious Indigenous film production companies in Australia, Sonic Nomad. At that time, Dr Saunders, as he was to later become, recognised a wide void within the mainstream Australian media in regard to Indigenous representation and thus began a labour of love to work for the betterment of the Indigenous population in terms of self-determination, equality and social justice.
However, it was a couple of years after the birth of Sonic Nomad in 2006 that Dr. Saunders graduated from Australian Film and TV and Radio School with an MA (Honours) and he really began his journey to being one of the most influential independent film makers in Australia. In 2007 he was commissioned to produce a series of twenty 30-minute documentaries, which were backed up by further music videos and documentaries for the Indigenous Programs Unit, ABC TV.
With an ever growing reputation as one of the leading film production companies in Newcastle, producing captivating movies, educational videos as well as contemporary music videos, Sonic Nomad, under the ever astute leadership of Dr. Saunders delivered some of their finest work that possibly culminated with the autobiographical full length movie, Teach A Man To Fish. This production which was awarded second place in the audience choice award at the Sydney International Film Festival, 2018, used the well-known proverb to explore the themes of education and self sufficiency that applies to larger communities as well as the individual, and highlights technical excellence along with thought provoking subject matter.
Recently conferred with his Doctorate from the University of Technology, Sydney, Dr. Saunders and Sonic Nomad’s stock continues to grow and as well as working on independent and commissioned pieces now provide a range of services including corporate video production in Newcastle and Port Macquarie as well as full postproduction services in Newcastle. Utilising top quality equipment and facilities and enlisting top professionals to collaborate, Sonic Nomad provide some of the very best video editing services not just in Newcastle and NSW but the whole of Australia.
Sonic Nomad is a completely Aboriginal owned business that specialises in storytelling, especially within the remit of social justice and providing a voice for Indigenous people that may otherwise struggle to have a voice. The quality and relevance of their work can be seen in numerous films and videos including the NITV commissioned ‘A Flash Black? The Micheal McLeod Story’, and the comedy mini-series ‘Whiteblackatcha’ which was the inspiration for ABC to commission ‘Black Santa’ in 2013.
If you have a story to tell or are looking to produce a compelling music video or an enlightening educational video but don’t really know where to start with the process, then Sonic Nomad, the outstanding Indigenous video production company serving Sydney and surrounding areas including Newcastle and Port Macquarie will be delighted to hear from you.
